The much-anticipated upcoming Julie Taymor directed Spider-Man musical entitled "Turn Off the Dark" just took another ambitious step towards completion. Scottish actor Alan Cumming has been confirmed as the pumpkin-bomb throwing Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin.

The actor will play the villain of SpiderMan: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway next February, opposite already confirmed Evan Rachel Wood, who will portray the Spider-Man alter-ego Peter Parker's love interest Mary Jane Watson in the production, which will feature new music composed by U2 stars Bono and The Edge.

There's still no word on who will play the lead, but Wood is rumored to be trying to land her Across The Universe co-star Jim Sturgess as the singing web-slinger.

Taymor directed Wood and Sturgess in the Beatles musical movie.

From the official website for the musical: "Drawing from over forty years of Marvel comic books for inspiration, Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark spins a new take on the mythic tale of a young man propelled from a modest rowhouse in Queens to the sky-scraping spire of the Chrysler Building, the bustling offices of the Daily Bugle, through the dizzying canyons of Manhattan, to new vistas never before seen.

The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down -- literally -- when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek -- suddenly endowed with astonishing powers -- soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character.

Spider-Man's battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected -- yielding new characters as well as familiar faces -- until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero's journey."

Playing the Green Goblin onstage marks the second time Cumming has portrayed a Marvel Comics character - he went blue to play Nightcrawler in the 2003 Bryan Singer directed X-Men sequel
X2.
