Minelli wants Weinstein to 'Get Happy' with new Garland projects
Liza Minelli is pleading with the prestigious Weinstein Company to avoid focusing on Judy Garland's problems with drug abuse in the upcoming film and stage adaptations of Gerald Clarke's biography "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland".
Based on hundreds of interviews plus Garland's own unfinished and unpublished autobiography, the 2001 best-seller portrays the dramatic highs and lows of the cultural icon's life-- from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days.
Minelli put her stamp of approval on Academy Award Nominee Anne Hathaway's casting as The Wizard of Oz star early on but now insists that the productions must focus on her mother's amazing talent and stellar career rather than her well known personal problems.
It is unclear as yet if the film or stage version will be undertaken first or if they will possibly compete directly with each other.
Minelli told a Canada's Citytv: "I hope that they talk about her the way she should be talked about which was she was a fabulous entertainer, a great mother and just a wonderful human being."
Is it just me or does Anne Hathaway look like a young Liza in a weird sort of Anime way?
At any rate, won't leaving out Judy's dependence on pills be almost as glaring as if they just kind of glossed over The Wizard of Oz?
The one thing I'm looking forward to seeing portrayed? Anne Hathaway giving birth to Liza Minelli on stage.
Just let that image sink in for a few minutes!
